A new culinary destination opened its doors in Montreal on April 20th on Metcalfe, corner Sherbrooke under the name MKT. The opening took form of a Media and VIP launch presented by Felipe del Pozo Public Relations. The talent behind this new venue is Chef Marino Tavares. He will be bringing to the table, literally, 25 years of experience, Portuguese culinary influences and his Mediterranean Italian savoir faire. His reputation is not to be made with his nomination as chef of the year by Société des chefs cuisiniers in 2001 and his earned star in 2008’s chefs’ gala. He combined his vision to Parry Kyriakodis’ and Joao Pereira’s, who comes from the Globe, to mold MKT. Warning: You may recognize some people and salivate when you see the plates on the photos from the opening party.

The restaurant’s name MKT represents the abreviation of Market as the idea behind it is to bring to your table and instantly evoke freshness in your mind, by serving you fresh vegetables, meats and fish directly from the market. Basically, MKT wants to bring the market freshness experience to our tables downtown.

Chef Tavares’ culinary inspiration comes from familial recipes to which he adds a touch of modernity such as slow cooking and marinades. The comfit duck risotto, the spaghettini amalfitana with anchovy (rarely seen in restaurants and looking forward to trying it), giant shrimp with polenta, braised meat sea food bouillabaisse are amongst the promising items on the menu, and can be accompanied with one of the fine wines offered. The restaurant aims to position itself as an inviting and mindful place.
