Interview With Zoe Boivin, Inspiring Artist Producing Refreshing Art

October 22, 2017
0 Comment

86bad1ee-10cd-41a3-8ec6-748031cc6cc4

1)      Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into painting?

I am a multidisciplinary artist that lives & works in Montreal. I love simple things, and I’m inspired by beauty in all its forms. Painting is the easiest way for me to share who I am. I can’t say that I “fell” into it, it’s more something that has just always been there. It comes naturally to me, and painting is how I reconnect with my true self. I’ve made it my purpose; to create visual images that I share with the world. If I spend several days without painting I feel lost.

JAKE par ZoéBoivin

2)      How would you describe your painting style? (the overall feel of your pieces, the signature style, the message it delivers, etc.)

I paint emotions. I let my energy and inspirations guide my choice of colors, movements, textures and lines, creating unique pieces each time. I work with bright colors, I never have enough of white! The overall sentiment is a mix of liberty, expression, identity, and affirmation. I don’t think of it as a signature or a style, but even when I try to paint something different, the overall feel always guides my hand. I paint circles of energy that sometimes turns out into various forms & shapes, that I associated with persons or animals. My work is also about the aura of femininity, personality, leadership and strength to conquer the world, and I want my viewers to understand that all of this comes from inside.

3)      What inspires you as an artist and for your collections?

Inspiration comes from the world that I live in; the beauty is literally everywhere. Nature, architecture, persons, music, animals, life in all its forms. I really love the fashion industry which inspires me a lot. I consider fashion as a type of art; designers are artists for me. It’s only the medium that changes. I love when things are feminine & a little bit weird at the same time.

I read and look at a lot of magazines, articles & books about fashion, design and architecture. For example, Aesthetica is a must for me. I also love to walk in the streets of Mile End where I live in Montreal. There is a great artistic energy, so when you walk outside with a camera it’s crazy what you can stumble on and discover. Even the simplest thing can be a source of inspiration. I also love Instagram as another source of inspiration ; it’s great to see other fellow artists working all over the world !

Zoe Boivin Painting

4)      What’s the price range for your art pieces and where can people find them?

Depending on the size and medium, my pieces range between $380 and $1 800. My work is available for sale on my website www.zoeboivin.com.

5)      What would be your craziest dream accomplishment as an artist?

I would like to build a large-scale installation in New York where people could get an immersive experience in my universe. I would love it to be a long lasting outdoor installation, that would eventually evolve with its surroundings.

6)      Do you think creativity is a super power? What does it bring to a person in your opinion? Should everyone try to develop it?

I think everyone is creative, that does not mean everyone should make art for a living, but I definitely think it should be a part of everyone’s life, no matter how exactly it ends up materializing itself. Creativity is the freedom of the mind, and no matter what you do, it can help you approach a problem differently. It brings freedom, inspiration, new directions and opportunities. As a visual artist, I am creative in a very traditional way, but I think it it’s definitely something that can, and should transcend the classic mediums. We all have that super-power inside!

Interview With MAS Montreal - The New Athletic Body Friendly Fashion Brand

September 20, 2017
0 Comment

MAS

1) What is your background as a founder and what pushed you to launch MAS Montreal?

Prior to finishing my undergraduate studies, I got really interested by the startup world. I learn a lot by attending different events in the process and by validating my idea. I used what I learned to launch a cupcake business with a friend. It was mostly for pleasure, but a good way to understand how a business and social media strategies work.

At that point, I knew I wanted to start something in the fashion industry too. I just didn’t know what yet. I considered  styling, but then after realizing how difficult it was to find clothes that fit well when your body is not “standard”, I knew it was a project for me. And since I experienced this situation, I knew exactly what people needed and what solutions could make clothes fit better non standard body types.

2) What is MAS Montreal and what does it stand for?

MAS means “more” in Spanish and it’s exactly what I want to offer my customers.

Better fits, Better quality, better products. I want them to know that no matter what their shape is, they shouldn’t settle for what doesn’t fit them. They are beautiful and deserve clothes that suit them properly.

3) How would you describe the MAS woman?

The MAS woman takes care of herself mentally and physically. She looks for balance to feel great in her body and constantly grows to become the best version of herself. She is looking for unique pieces of clothing that suit her curves perfectly and which make her feel comfortable throughout the day.

4) What type of pieces are offered and where can we find them?

MAS is specialized in everyday basics proudly made in Montreal. All the pieces are created in order to constitute perfect essentials to a wardrobe. You can find t-shirts, button up shirts, blazers, crewnecks, pants and jeans. We design clothes as neutral as possible to encourage  people to keep them as long as possible. That said, I always add a special touch to makes them unique and not boring.

You can find the entire collection online. I’m also doing events to give my clients more opportunities to see, touch and try on pieces of the collection. People can also find us and see more of what we do on Instagram and Facebook.

5) How would you describe the DNA of the brand and where did it come from?

It took me a while to find the perfect words to describe MAS. MAS is about body diversity.

I have always been into fashion, getting new clothes, the art of finding the best clothes to express my style.

At some point, I got frustrated and fed up by how sizes are defined as if there was only one type of body. I am observing more inclusion towards plus sizes now, but what about being normal or muscular. It’s not because I go to the gym five times a week that I want to wear athletic leggings all day everyday. My brands is all about being proud of having a different body shape and not accepting the pressure to fit in the model that the media try to sell us.

MAS 2

6) You are currently running a crowdfunding campaing on Ulule, can you tell us a little bit more about it? (Target, purpose, link, other details, etc.)

Yes, our goal is to reach 2000$ with the crowd funding campaign. With this. We want to launch two pairs of jeans, Karen for women and our very first piece for men Josh. Both tailored to eliminate the gap at the back of jeans and to feel more comfortable in the thigh area. So the target is to pre-sell as many as possible.

We also want to purchase material for the events we organize such as cloth hangers and visuals. The funding will also fuel our marketing efforts to reach new audiences, potential collaborators like blogs, media and boutiques.

7) What challenges do you think young designers and brand creators are facing in Montreal and how can the community help them?

Having to do everything on a tiny budget. We have to be as present on media as those giant brands, we need to have as much variety as already established brands and prices as affordable as them to be competitive. All this is unfortunately not possible when you are starting a fashion brand. You are on a tiny budget and you need to invest in many things before being even able to sell your first item.

People are getting more and more sensitive to buying local, we need to keep spreading awareness in that way, encouraging young designers by buying and wearing their clothes and always prioritizing quality over quantity. The community can also help by sharing our products and spreading the news about local brands. Also, the government can help by creating more and more events to showcase the work we do in the fashion industry.

Your Guide To #WearMtl - Fashion Preview F/W17 Edition

September 20, 2017
0 Comment

Fashion week is one of those times I live for, what my fashion dreams are made of, so imagine my enthusiasm when the dates were announced for the next edition of Fashion Preview. Mark your calendars, from October 17th to 19th the city’s about to get all fashed up! In the mean time, here’s your appetizer while you wait: A guide to wearing Montreal designers based on the last Fashion Preview edition featuring Fall/Winter 2017 fashion last March.

[portfolio_slideshow]

Collège LaSalle:

Style: Very funky, fashion forward and over the top runway. Let’s put it all out there kind of vibe (which I LOVE!)

Where to wear it: Fashion week worthy pieces, a fashion forward party or you can even borrow some pieces to create an original Halloween costume.

We love: The goldmine of creativity that shines through all the different textures, fabrics, materials, colours.

Shop: N/A

Brit Wacher

Style: If we mixed classic style with harlequin influences and goth notes, Brit Wacher’s FW17 collection would be the end result. It’s a very Harley Quinn goes to the office or Harley Quinn shows a little less skin kind of style.

Where to wear it: You can definitely mix some statement pieces from the collection with more sober pieces and hop on your day to work or to a party. You may also rock one of the flirty Harleyish dresses for a date or your Friday night.

We love: The Harley inspiration (sorry can’t get over it!), the destructured cuts, the incorporated accessories and the unusual colors (unusual for a runway).

Shop: http://britwacher.bigcartel.com

Naïké

Style: Ledback chic, Afternoon at the marina, effortless chic

Where to wear it: Work, Sunday brunch, a walk at the Old Port and pretty much throughout your lifestyle.

We love: The effortless chicness, the comfort, the apparent purity and quality of the fabrics, the stylish coats and the lovely maxi winter dresses signé Naïké.

Shop: https://www.naike.ca/shop

Helmer

Style: Chic extravangant, think Sex & The City and how Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte used to wear the latest collections and could literally jump onto a couture runway and fit in with the originality, sumptuousness and statement of their outfits.

Where to wear it: When I think Helmer, I think party, refined cocktail party. However, you can always borrow a statement piece for a little extra oomph to your office look.

We love: When you wear Helmer, you literally wear art and that’s a guaranteed show stopper!

Shop: 2020 Boul St-Laurent, Montréal, QC H2X 2T2, Canada

MUSE by Christian Chenail

Style: Office chic with a twist of modern à la Jessica in the tv series Suits.

Where to wear it: This collection has office attire written all over it and who doesn’t want to look like Jessica?! Networking events, chic formal cocktail parties and girl tea parties are also an option.

We love: The blazers have a certain je ne sais quoi, that rebel biker, yet feminine touch and it’s got my seal of approval!

Shop: 4467 Rue Saint-Denis, Montréal, QC H2J 2L2

Leinad Beaudet

Style: Mature pinup, Sunday at the church.

Where to wear it: This collection can be office friendly if paired with a blazer or cardigan. The chic stamp on it gives it a more evening vibe.

We love: The flowy culottes and the apparent comfort.

Shop: https://www.leinadbeaudet.com/ (online shop coming soon)

KQK

Style: Endrogynous, minimalist, edgy classic.

Where to wear it: You can wear this designer pretty much anywhere in your day to day life. It basically embraces your lifestyle. That includes work, a more led back activity or a dressier happy hour with your friends.

We love: The edginess of the random fabric cuts and asymetry. I am literally dying for the dresses, blazers and rompers!

Shop: http://www.kqk.ca/en/shop/

V-Franz

Style: Edgy oversized street wear. This collection has some punk references.

Where to wear it: To your laidback activities or friendly gatherings. Some pieces can be transposed into a chicer or more formal outfit for the more adventures.

We love: The asymmetry and translucidness of some pieces. We also love how every collection is full of surprises and plunges us in a new culture.

Shop: http://www.v-franz.com/shop (coming soon)

COLLAGE Fashion

Style: Romantic glam, glittery, satin, velvet, fringes.

Where to wear it: The key word here is chic glam, so any cocktail, chic party and even your glorious days at work can use a touch of glam (hey some people dress everyday as if it were their birthday!).

We love: The velvet game of this collection and the tapestry inspired vests and blazers are to die for!

Shop: N/A

Coquette en soie

Style: Classic romantic or fifty shades of silk textures (silk is one of the most fascinating fabrics to me as it comes in different textures and appearances).

Where to wear it: Work and date friendly. Happy hour with your friends also works.

We love: The subtle shine of silk and its romantic touch!

Shop: http://www.coquetteensoie.com/boutique/

Robert Atelier

Style: Sober classics revisited with a touch of originality in details.

Where to wear it: Work and regular activities.

We love: The volume which speaks comfort and the simplistic classic looks!

Shop: http://www.robertatelier.ca/boutique

Markantoine

Style: Young edgy eclectic fireworks (fireworks are turned up vibes). Could this be… Could Markantoine be our Alexander McQueen? So this would be your Sex & The City style if the characters were 20 years younger TODAY.

Where to wear it: When you go out with your friends and you’re on a mission to SLAY! You can also edge-up an office outfit by mix and matching with one of these pieces.

We love: The fabric/color mix and variety! The statement behind each piece of clothing might leave you speachless (in a good way, promise!).

Shop: http://www.markantoine.ca/shop-1

École supérieure de mode

Style: Chic neutral original looks in the form of asymmetrical draped designs. Some femme fatale matrix style designs also slipped onto the runway.

Where to wear it: Business in the front, party in the details gives the students’ collection that work and after work activities with your friends.

We love: The originality and level of professional attire students came up with.

Shop: N/A

Cégep Marie-Victorin

Style: Spiritual meets led back active vibes kind of style. Chic points added by fur coats and pureness of materials and neutral colors like white.

Where to wear it: cozy weekend at the chalet.

We love: The zen vibes and the overall allure of the fur coats.

Shop: N/A

Style Experimenting Series

June 4, 2017
0 Comment

The way you dress  is the first impression people have about you! For this reason, your style should be a reflection of who you are now and who you want to be in the future. As Seth Godin would say, that’s the story you’re telling about yourself, it’s part of your brand!

Which is why we’re happy to introduce our “Style Experiment  Series” to get people a little out of their comfort zone and make them fall in love a little or a whole lot more with fashion and, of course, get them to try different styles respecting their core DNA and adding an extra The Montreal Fashion Society touch. For our first edition, we had the pleasure to style experiment with this gentleman, Ilias Benjelloun, creative director at MTL New Tech and interpreneurship catalyst at Desjardins LAB, under a Sillcon Valley meets James Bond theme.

  [portfolio_slideshow]

For anyone who wants to experiment with us or like us, remember, just like about anything in life, you’ve gotta experiment to determine which style best represents you, makes you feel comfortable and which sends the message you want to send out there to your target audience. So, how do I experiment with style you might ask? Here’s where the fun begins…

Experiment as you answer these questions and enjoy the process.

1. How do people in my industry dress like? Every industry has its own kind of dress code. You can find out about the dress code in yours by determining the recurring clothing pieces and styles you see through networking events, conferences, summits and by what its leaders usually wear. If you observe its gurus, they usually represent well the industry’s image, as they inspire many and act as leaders of all sorts of trends. Per example, the tech industry, similarly to the video game industry loves hoodies, sneakers, geeky t-shirts and jeans. On the other hand professionals like lawyers and accountants often rock suits and more corporate like styles. People in the fashion industry are expected to add one or many creative twists to their look, which generates those killer fashion week street styles.

2. How do my idols and mentors dress like? If you chose someone to be your idol or your mentor, chances are you admire the person for her work, accomplishments or what they exude in general and you’ll get a whole lot of inspiration for the person you want to become from them, which is cool.

3. Which TV character’s style would be closest to mine? Harvey Specter, Carrie Bradshaw, Richard Hendricks, Blair or Serena and any other character you secretly wish was your real life BFF or a future, under construction, version of you. Who did you identify with growing up and who do you identify with TODAY.

4. Do I want to be loud or discrete? Once you figured out what type of clothes you want to wear, or which style you want to embrace, you can also explore its loudness. This basically falls under which color palette are you venturing in, will you be zero accessorizing or will you stack up on those little style enhancers just like an experimented fashion blogger or icon.

5. What are Google, Pinterest and Instagram suggesting for you to try? Just by googling some keywords that best represent your style and personality, it will not only inspire you some killer outfits, but it will also guide you through putting them together and purchasing them and those are sources that keep on giving if you check them out every now and then for updates.

6. What’s my budget? Would you believe me if I told you, your budget shouldn’t have any impact on your style? Well you should! The only impact your budget has, if any, is on where you shop and when you shop, meaning which brands, designers and boutiques you have to put on your radar and the sale seasons you’ll have to add to your calendar. Other than than, you can put together pretty much any look, and by that I mean any look, with any reasonable budget, and by that I don’t mean $3.00.

Remember to continuously experiment and update your style as you grow and evolve.  You don’t want to look like you’re visiting from the past, like you’re still sporting your high school clothes or worst, like your look is telling an opposite story from the story you want to be telling!

A Little Affordable Luxury Shopping Heaven In The Heart Of Downtown

March 9, 2017
0 Comment

 [portfolio_slideshow]

Last week I had the pleasure of discovering a completely hidden gem right in the heart of downtown Montreal, in the Cartier building more precisely (3410 Peel, Suite 1704, corner of Sherbrooke and Peel).

This by appointment luxury oasis has great potential to become your best kept secret when it comes to finding original, vintage or luxury pieces. With its mix of both new and preloved items from different established household designers to Italian signature labels. For example, I had a crush on many items: Gorgeous Dolce & Gabanna clutch, Chanel necklace and earrings, Chanel ensemble, Manolo Blahnik and YSL heels. I also enjoyed discovering an Italian brand named GIZIA which adds a funky twist to its designs. Another cool thing about this place is the vast selection of sizes (from 0 to 24 for clothing and 5 to 11.5 for shoes) and price ranges starting at $60 for clothing, $100 for sun glasses and shoes and $100 for purses. And between us, if you get a bunch of items at once, you may be able to get an even better price. There are about 500 plus-size pieces, items from different decades and a visual of color and fabric display that may leave you dreaming for days.

Anastasia

Anastasia, the charming young woman behind this fashion heaven also sells some of her own designed fur coats and accessories. She has dressed celebrities like Celine Dion and has 1001 crunchy stories about fashion and art. She has a keen eye for unique pieces of art and put together quite a collection in a separate room which has a very museumy feel to it. You can literally feel and see the richness of history in that room through its gorgeous items. I had the pleasure of contemplating a 300 year old wooden cross, a middle ages maid fireplace door, a metallic croissants holder and many other items I did not even know existed in the past. Anastasia not only makes you feel at home in the Cartier (affordable luxury) apartment, but she has a story for every item and you can feel her passion through those stories and how she carefully handles every one of those pieces.

She regularly adds new items from the stored inventory and from new purchases. You can book an appointment with her by phone at 514-815-0409 or by email at info@designerluxuryforless.com to shop and the schedule is flexible.

You can also check out their Facebook page.
