Interview With Michel Grondines, Vincent D'Amérique CEO x FMD19 Runway Shows

August 22, 2019
0 Comment

Just in time for tonight’s Vincent d’Amérique runway show “Taillé Pour Le Mouvement” during Festival Mode & Design, here is a mini interview with Michel Grondines, CEO of the company with a little surprise during the show. Head to Quartier des Spectacles at 8pm for the free outdoor show unveiling this collection in association with Georges Saint-Pierre, followed by the after party at Furco at 9:30 p.m.

1) Which piece in the “Made for Movement” collection is your favourite piece?

A black jersey jacket and trouser set with a white tiled pattern, it’s a set that combines character and comfort.

2) And the one we are most likely to see worn by Georges St-Pierre?

All the pieces will be worn by Georges, but one of the pieces that best represents him is a jersey jacket printed tone on tone with a black contrasting hood. This item represents the urban side of the collection…

3) What are the characteristics of the collection in terms of fit and cuts?

All jackets, pants and shirts have fitted cuts, but the stretchy materials allow each garment to have an unrivalled fluidity of movement.

4) What is the essence of the message behind the themes chosen for the new collection?

The prestence for anyone who wants to dress well all by being very comfortable.

5) What Fall/Winter 2019 trends for men would you like to see on the streets?

I would like to see more men dare to mix patterns.

6) There is a trend of women customers shopping in some men’s shops. Have you seen this trend as well? Do you think this will affect the men’s apparel market in general, in addition to unisex lines?

It’s not uncommon to see women shopping through our shirts or pants in stretchy materials in store. I believe that there may be a market to develop. There will be women wearing men’s outfits during our fashion show on August 22nd at the Fashion and Design Festival.

The First Monday In May Movie - Your Exclusive MET Gala Invite

May 14, 2016
0 Comment

Editor’s Note

On May 6th, The First Monday in May, a documentary about the creation of The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s most attended fashion exhibition in history, “China: Through The Looking Glass” premiered at Montreal’s Du Parc Cinema and we had the pleasure to attend. The film is a behind the scenes of putting together Chinese meets western inspired designer pieces. The exhibition was pulled off  by Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton, which is refered to as the new Grace Coddington by some. The movie, directed by andrew Rossi, takes a slow start with heavier technical information for the first 15 minutes, then gets magical as the Costume Institute opens its doors, or shall I say its closets, to unveil some of the world’s grandest master pieces and as John Galliano, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Baz Luhrmann, Anna Wintour and Kar-Wai Wong weigh in on major industry hot topics. You even get to see Wintour’s cozy meeting with André Leon Talley and other attendees in a living room (she was wearing jeans!!). The magic takes a culminating point as we see exclusive takes from the 2015 MET Ball with Rihanna performing after her omelette dress red carpet entrance (which took 3 years to make) by Chinese designer Guo Pei (a name to remember) and many other celebrities posing, mingling and then dancing to Rihanna’s jam. The artist expressed fashion’s ability to gather different cultures and people under one roof for THE big fashion event of the year, considering or not fashion week, I leave it to you to decide.

The film questioned fashion’s legitimacy as art stating that not all fashion is art, some of it being purely commercial to which I agree,  commercial is when there is no, to minimal, risk, whereas art is when you would wear it on the street and all heads, no exception, turn and either comment or serve you that aw expression. Wintour was also asked about the movie Devil Wears Prada, written by a former assistant inspired by Anna herself to which Vogue’s editor calmly replied: If it brings more interest and attention to the fashion industry, then why not. She was also asked about her dragon lady reputation to which she explained being a result of her very decisive personality. Anna’s power comes, not only from her editor position at Vogue, but from her involvements in different projects and ability to bring together different cultures. See Nicole’s favorite 2016 MET Gala looks.

2016 Edition – Technology Meets The MET

Another year, another theme that takes the Met Gala and reveals the wildest of looks. This years theme for the Costume Institute Ball was “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.,” Meaning a sea of metal and sequin gowns that flooded the red carpet, not so original. Joan Smalls and Kendall Jenner both were adorned in jewelled frocks – of course stunningly beautiful, but nothing new, especially considering this year’s theme.

The real stars that took the red carpet that stayed true to the techy theme were Claire Danes in her couture, L.E.D. Zac Posen gown, Karolina Kurkova in a Marchesa x IBM in a floral “Cognitive Dress,” and Poppy Delevingne in another stunning Marchesa number.

Claires Danes L.E.D. princess dress literally lit up the Met Gala and turned heads on the red carpet. If this isn’t reminiscent of Cinderella of the future then I don’t know what is.

Karolina Kurkova was another celebrity who wore a tech dress, with 150 L.E.D. lights attached. The lights were designed  to recognize five key emotions including joy, passion, excitement, encouragement and curiosity, which were reactions chosen by the designers.  The emotions were then expressed through psychologically coinciding colors using IBM’s Cognitive Color Tool.

Last but not least, Poppy Delevingne, Cara’s sister in case you were wondering, wore a gothic – floor length, flapper inspired metal dress by Marchesa. This dress is jaw dropping – a walking piece of art. Bravo!

The Met Gala never seems to disappoint with the constant changing theme and the endless amount of celebrities that attend each year. This year was no different than any other and brought out moving pieces of art.

Art Tattoo Montreal - The Fashion Angle

tattoo

To celebrate the 13th edition of the famous Art Tattoo Show. I had the pleasure to interview Valerie Emond, co founder of studio tattoo mania. We talked tattoos, fashion and tattoo show! The Art Tattoo Show will take place in Place Bonaventure from the 11th to the 13th of September. It will reunite more than 250 artists, local as well as international. Tattoos, performances, live music, and much more on the site of the event.

1. Why do people become tattoo artists?
It’s different for everyone, but most of the time, it speaks volumes to people who want to differentiate themselves, have their own lifestyle. In general, it’s for people who truly value their autonomy, people who would rather work for themselves and have the freedom to explore artistically.

2. Is there a typical path to become a tattoo artist?
Usually, the most respectable way to start is to find a mentor. To show respect for the other tattoo artists, you have to start at the bottom. This way, you also minimize risks of potential mistakes by learning from someone who has a lot more experience.

3. What are some qualities of a good tattoo artist?
It’s really important to be comfortable around people. The job requires you to be with the same client for several hours so you have to know how to make them feel at ease, in order to offer him the best possible experience. You also have to know how to reassure a client. A lot of people come in and they’re afraid the tattoo is really going to hurt; you have to show some empathy.

rihanna 2

4. What is the place of tattoos in the fashion industry?
Since tattoos have always existed, I think it’s hard to see them as a trend. You could say that some trends do exist when it comes to the style or the location of the tattoo. For example, it’s safe to say that Rihanna’s under-boob tattoo has a certain influence, it is trending right now. Although, some classics, just like a chanel bag, never fall out of trend. You also have to know that a lot of well known designers have collaborated with tattoo artists. It has a strong influence as a part of popular culture; it’s something the fashion industry can’t ignore.

5. What are the classics that never fall out of trend?
Usually, it’s the small tattoos people don’t regret. I would say roses and butterflies are always coming back, but their meaning is different from one person to another.

6. Who should attend the Art Tattoo Show?
Everyone! Whether they’re passionate about the lifestyle or simply art enthusiasts who are intrigued by the industry, everyone is welcome. People usually come for many different reasons. They come to get inspiration for their new tattoos, to discover artists from all over the globe and even to purchase prints from well known tattoo artists. Everyone there, is really open minded and welcoming, they love to share their passion. It’s a really good way to demystify the scene, to know everything there is to know.

7. What are you hoping to bring to the Montreal tattoo scene with the Art Tattoo Show?
Since it’s going to be our 13th edition, we can already see the evolution regarding the quality of the work. Receiving all these people from all over the world allows everyone to compare their work and refine their style. It’s really important to us that Montreal keeps its good reputation in the tattoo world. Other than that, our main goal is to showcase talents, whether they’re local or international.
